Uses localStorage (or node-localstorage) to implement a Least Recently Updated cache

Features

  • Uses localStorage when running in the browser
  • If called from browsers that don't support localStorage, it will just not save anything in the cache so your client code should work exactly the same in older browsers. You have to account for the situation that your keys might disappear from the cache anyway because it will delete old records when it needs the space, so there is never any guarantee that the stuff you put in it will be there.
  • Uses node-localstorage when running in node.js
  • Allows you to set the quota when running in node.js
  • Implements Least Recently Updated algorithm which is ideal for incremental chart updates among other use cases
  • Allows for the injection of a different package than node-localstorage in case you wanted to implement an in-memory Flash, or other localStorage substitute

Usage

CoffeeScript

{LocalCache} = require('../')
localCache = new LocalCache()

localCache.setItem('myFirstKey', {key: "value", anotherkey: "another value"})
console.log(localCache.getItem('myFirstKey').key)
# value

LocalCache.localStorage._deleteLocation() # cleans up scratch directory created during doctest

JavaScript

var LocalCache = require('../').LocalCache;
var localCache = new LocalCache();

localCache.setItem('myFirstKey', {key: "value", anotherkey: "another value"});

console.log(localCache.getItem('myFirstKey').key);
// value

LocalCache.localStorage._deleteLocation();

Installation

npm install localcache --save

Changelog

  • 0.2.0 - 2012-01-13 - Added code and tests to confirm that it will just not cache anything when there is no 'localStorage' like old browsers
  • 0.1.0 - 2013-01-03 - Original version
